For the third year in a row SEI moves up the rankings in the Global Go To Think Tank Index, placed for 2012 as the 6th most influential environment think tank, up from 8th position in 2011, and the leading one based outside the U.S.
The index is based on an assessment of more than 6,500 think tanks around the world, and is published in the 2012 Global Go To Think Tank Report, compiled annually by the University of Pennsylvania’s Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program.
Johan L. Kuylenstierna, SEI Executive Director, said, “Naturally we are very pleased to be recognized as one of the world’s top environment think tanks. It is testimony to the quality of SEI’s research and our growing impact on policy and decision making, and I want to pay particular tribute to all of SEI’s staff, partners and associates.”
“Motivated staff and strong and effective partnerships are at the core of what we do and will always be a priority,” Kuylenstierna added. “Our focus on outreach and direct engagement with key audiences also played a prominent role in 2012. In the coming year we’ll continue to build on our partnerships and research capacity to strengthen our support for decision-making on sustainable development.”
The Global GoTo Think Tank Index is the result of an international survey of over 1,950 scholars, public and private donors, policy-makers and journalists who helped rank more than 6,500 think tanks using a set of 17 criteria. The purpose of the rankings is to help improve the profile and performance of think tanks. According to the report the value of the ranking process is to recognize some of the world’s leading think tanks and to “highlight the important contribution that think tanks make to governments and civil societies around the world”.
SEI Research Director Måns Nilsson said, “This suggests that we are on the right track with our approach, which is firmly based on excellence in multidisciplinary scientific research, robust partnerships, and effective stakeholder engagement”.
SEI is headquartered in Stockholm, but also has centres in the U.S., the U.K., Estonia, Tanzania and Bangkok, and is active worldwide.
This is the sixth edition of the Global Go To Think Tanks Report, described as “the insiders guide to the global marketplace of ideas”. The report was launched on 17 January, 2013 at the United Nations University in New York.
