New agreement links SEI with Korea Environment Institute

SEI has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Korea Environment Institute (KEI), a publicly funded think tank that seeks to influence Korean environmental policy through innovative research and environmental impact assessments.

The MOU was signed by Dr Byung-wook Lee, president of KEI, and Johan L. Kuylenstierna, SEI’s executive director, at SEI’s booth at World Water Week.

“The conclusion of the MOU between SEI and KEI at this historic place, where the first global environmental meeting – the Stockholm Conference – was held, will be a significant milestone. We look forward for fruitful outcomes from our collaborative efforts,” Lee says.

KEI’s international cooperation programme includes capacity-building for officials from developing countries on environmental impact assessment and sustainable development, along with knowledge exchange, collaborative research and a range of other activities.

“For 20 years, KEI has been doing impressive work to promote sustainable development, not only in Korea but also in the developing world,” says Kuylenstierna. “Our two institutes share similar visions and goals. Both of us bridge science and policy, carrying out cutting-edge environmental research and making recommendations for policy-makers.”

Founded in 1993, KEI focuses its research primarily on environmental economics, climate change, environmental management and risk assessment, ecology and environmental planning, water, and environmental assessment.

“Partnerships like this can draw together the ideas, the knowledge and the energies of like-minded organizations around the globe. Through cooperation, we can help the world’s policy-makers to keep development on a sustainable path,” Kuylenstierna says.
