This project aims to develop a basis for anticipating future environmental changes and their impacts on these diseases and to develop the capacity of health and veterinary services to respond to early warnings of future outbreaks.
The project will focus on building a disease risk mapping system for three water-related high-impact vector-borne diseases (malaria, Rift Valley fever and schistosomiasis) in Africa, accounting for environmental/climatic trends to predict future risk.
The project, which will last for approximately four years, will focus on eastern Africa, specifically Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania.
It will involve 15 partners worldwide: CSAG, University of Cape Town; International Livestock Research Institute; Kenya Medical Research Institute; Ministry of Health, Rwanda; Ministry of Health, Uganda; National University of Rwanda, Rwanda; Salzburg University, Austria; SEI; Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute, Sweden; The Abdus Salem International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Italy; Trinity College, Ireland; University of Durham, United Kingdom; University of Liverpool; University of Nairobi, Kenya.
