This project aims to optimize the commercial potential of bio-refinery crops by maximizing the value, volume, and range of materials that can be produced using all parts of the crop, whilst at the same time minimizing the impact of the crop on the environment in terms of carbon and energy balance as well as biodiversity considerations.
Our current dependence on fossil carbon reserves for energy and raw materials is clearly not sustainable. The move to biorenewables involves the use of natural materials for the production of transportation fuels and industrial raw materials using carbon fixed and released within the natural yearly carbon cycle.
The development of integrated biorefineries, which capture value from all elements of renewable feedstocks, is seen as an essential step towards a more sustainable basis for modern industrial society.
Project objectives
This project aims to optimize the commercial potential of bio-refinery crops by maximizing the value, volume, and range of materials that can be produced using all parts of the crop, whilst at the same time minimizing the impact of the crop on the environment in terms of carbon and energy balance as well as biodiversity considerations.
The project addresses technological hurdles to extraction and processing of natural feedstocks and, importantly, it integrates assessment of the environmental, social and economic sustainability of these processes.
