SCOPE assessment of bioenergy and sustainability

The Scientific Committee on the Environment (SCOPE) will conduct a Rapid Assessment Process (RAP) on Bioenergy and Sustainability, with 16 background papers and four cross-cutting working groups. It aims to provide, within approximately the next year, a synthesis on key sustainability issues for bioenergy in light of efforts around the world to expand the use of modern bioenergy as part of the global transition to sustainable energy sources.

The goal is to clarify the role of modern bioenergy in supporting sustainable development at a time when more than 75% of biomass used for energy globally is still used in traditional forms, which contributes to environmental degradation while also depriving users of the benefits of modern energy services.

SEI will chair one of the four cross-cutting groups, on food security.
