Mangrove ecosystems, communities and conflict: developing knowledge-based approaches to reconciling multiple demands (MANGROVE)The project aims to develop action plans to reconcile multiple demands placed on mangroves and adjacent coastal zones in Southeast Asia; local and national level stakeholders will participate in action planning, ensuring widespread support and increasing the likelihood of implementation.
This EU Sixth Framework Programme project (2005-2009) aims to improve understanding of mangrove ecosystems, communities and conflicts to develop knowledge-based approaches to reconcile the multiple demands on mangroves and adjacent coastal zones in Southeast Asia.
Experience in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia shows that mangroves are often situated within contexts in which the historical legacy is characterised by conflicting interests in terms of the management, governance and use of coastal resources. Hence, mangroves can be arenas for discord but also, potentially, for reconciliation.
