The meaning of vulnerability within the context of climate change has over the years created a growing confusion about what it is and how it should be assessed.
In their paper, Towards a Formal Framework of Vulnerability to Climate Change, SEI researcher Richard Klein and colleagues from Germany and India have taken the bold step to try and eliminate this confusion by using mathematics to describe the concept, rather than natural language.

– The concept of vulnerability has proven difficult to make operational in research and policy. We identified a need to avoid the misunderstandings that result from the use of ambiguous terminology, Richard Klein says.

He considers this paper to be an important first step towards instilling some rigour and consistency into vulnerability assessment.
