Atakilte's research area is within Rural Development focusing on institutions and governance, rural-urban interfaces, natural resources management, and gender relations in agricultural and livelihood systems.
His current works also include food and energy security challenges in Africa and the implications of biofuels as a development trajectory for rural transformation. He have also carried out other types of activities such as coordination of interdisciplinary research networks, organizing international conferences and panels, preparing research projects for funding and implementation of projects.
Atakilte's work has taken him to different working cultures, some requiring independent work and some teamwork, and they have been located in different organizations. He worked at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences as a lecturer and coordinator in an MSc program in Integrated Water Resources Management, at the Stockholm University as a researcher and at the Nordic Africa Institute as a researcher.
Much of his work has focused on countries in Africa, especially Ethiopia, Tanzania and Zimbabwe, where he has been leading research projects and conducted intensive field research and frequent visits.
