Karl Hallding heads Stockholm Environment Institute’s China Cluster and has extensive experience from international co-operation with China on environment and sustainable development since the mid 1980s. Karl is also theme leader for Rethinking Development.

He was the main author of UNDP’s China Human Development Report 2002 – Making Green Development a Choice and participated in the expert team behind the recent OECD Environmental Performance Review of China where he was responsible for drafting the chapter on Environmental – Social Interface.

Karl is a graduate from Stockholm University’s East Asia Progamme (1990) and has a bachelor’s degree in engineering (1980). Before joining SEI in 2000 he had a two year posting as environmental advisor with the Swedish Embassy in Beijing.

From 1990 to 1998 he was responsible for China co-operation at the IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute.
