Prof Thor Axel Stenström joined SEI in Nov 2006, as a part time Senior Research Fellow and Health and Hygiene Expert, within the EcoSanRes Programme.


He also has a position as Chief Microbiologist at Water and Environmental Microbiology at the Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control and as Prof II at the University of Life Sciences in Norway. He further functions as an external advisor for WHO in Geneva.


He has more then 30 years of experience in the fields of water, sanitation and health and have published well over 120 peer-reviewed papers, book chapters and conference proceedings.


Thor Axel Stenström has a University background in biology and chemistry with a specialization in the environmental and aquatic areas, especially microbiology.


During the last 30 years he has worked at “the interphase” between health and environmental questions lately in the areas of risk assessment and health related water and sanitation issues including epidemiological investigations and related applied research mainly in multi discipline project include, technical, social, agricultural, management and institutional aspects.


He enjoys the role as communicator, from scientific issues to practical details. Project management and student supervision has been an integral part of his work during number of years. Over the years he has been involved assignments in different developing countries, mainly in Africa and Asia and in interaction with different international organisations including research, project management and as advisor.


Both in Scandinavia as well as in the international work the “risk assessment/management” has been in the forefront. This has also been part of the mission related to national and international guidelines as in the approach to scientific issues.
