SEI 2015 news weADAPT relaunch
Developed and managed by SEI’s Oxford Centre, weADAPT is a collaborative web-based platform where practitioners, researchers and decision-makers access and share knowledge on adaptation planning. The platform includes guidelines for interpreting and analysing climate information, methods for assessing social and climate vulnerability, and a range of tools to support adaptation decision-making.
weADAPT has links to over 2000 global projects, articles and case studies in the Google Earth/Maps “Adaptation Layer” and “Knowledge Base”, and has grown rapidly in the past three years, with more than 2500 members and 600 organizations now registered and visitors from 190 countries. Many of the members have begun to co-create knowledge from historically hard-to-reach areas with low or no bandwidth through intermediaries both connected to the platform and knowledgeable about the work of partners on the ground.
The new site has an easier-to-use interface and additional features based on feedback from users. Adaptation projects from around the world and the latest content added onto the platform is given visibility on the “mobile-friendly” homepage. weADAPT is also using the semantic tool Climate Tagger, which utilizes Linked Open Data to scan, sort, categorize and enrich climate and development-related data.
The new design has created spaces for learning and reflection through discussion forums and the ability to comment on content. The discussion forums will allow for multi-stakeholder participation and co-exploration of knowledge on the platform. Alongside improved user profiles, this will help users connect with adaptation researchers, practitioners and decision-makers around the world.
Unique to weADAPT is the link of climate data relevant to adaptation actions on the ground – the “Adaptation Layer” map – as a result of the collaboration with the Climate Information Portal (CIP) developed by the Climate Systems Analysis Group (CSAG) at University of Cape Town. This enables co-creation of knowledge, creativity and innovation, as users can see climate data in a social adaptation context, and to find data to support research, project planning or policy design in a specific location.
One of the aims of weADAPT is to foster collaboration and build an enduring community of practice. All content is promoted through multiple social media channels and through a biweekly newsletter, and online participation is complemented by face-to-face capacity-building on climate adaptation issues.
