The world is facing rapid urbanization coupled with accelerated population growth. And Africa is currently the fastest growing and urbanizing continent: its population is projected to double from around 1 billion in 2010 to 2 billion by 2040. If not tackled, growing pressure on natural resources, weak urban planning and management institutions, and inadequate governance will continue to degrade the quality of life and the environment in urban areas.

There is a pressing need for research on these multi-faceted and complex issues. Urbanization is one of the growing areas of SEI’s work – addressed together with vital cross cutting issues such as climate change, water and sanitation, air pollution and urban planning. Developing our urbanization programme will enable us to explore opportunities for sustainable urbanization to inform policy-makers and planners.
