The Independent Research Forum

The Independent Research Forum is a collaboration of 10 research institutes from across the globe, providing independent and broad-based scientific advice on sustainable development to UN bodies, national governments, local government, civil society, and business and others.

In 2017, the IRF started a new series of regional retreats for policy-makers to share their experiences and successes in implementing the 2030 Agenda. SEI co-organized the second of these, which took place in Bogotá, Colombia, in October 2017.

This followed the first highly successful series of themed retreats for international negotiators in the UN Open Working Group (OWG), the body created to produce a first draft of the Sustainable Development Goals. These retreats provided OWG members the opportunity to hear the latest analysis from IRF members, and discuss substantive and conceptual issues away from the negotiating table. IRF continued to convene retreats for negotiators after the OWG wrapped up its work in 2014. The latest, in May 2015, looked at monitoring and accountability.
