About SEI Africa

The mission of SEI’s Africa Centre is to support close collaboration with African organizations and networks on key environmental and development issues.

The Africa Centre provides a hub for SEI’s engagements across the continent, and works actively to make connections with research and policy organizations. From its establishment in August 2008 until June 2013, SEI Africa was based at the Institute of Resource Assessment at the University of Dar es Salaam. As of July 2013, it is based in Nairobi, Kenya, hosted by the World Agroforestry Centre. Staff members are active across South, East and West Africa.

The Africa Centre’s work focuses on three key areas:

  • Climate and energy: SEI Africa’s research programme on energy and climate change seeks to explore and support socially inclusive, low-carbon and climate resilient development pathways at multiple levels.
  • Water, land and ecosystems services: The water, land and ecosystems services programme aims to generate and disseminate knowledge and solutions for addressing sustainable natural resource management, ecosystems integrity and human wellbeing. Capacity building is also at the core of our work promoting the use of the Water Evaluation and Planning (WEAP) to support decision makers, including local communities, policy makers, private sector and civil society.
  • Sustainable urbanization: SEI Africa’s managing urban change programme aims to explore challenges related to rapid urbanization and to contribute to identifying and supporting more sustainable urbanization pathways in sub-Saharan Africa.
