The Ecological Flows Project in New England

This is a collaborative effort with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Nature Conservancy and Tufts University in defining guidelines for reservoir operators on how to improve flow conditions downstream of dams without dramatically impacting the water supply function of these facilities.

The overall goal of this program is to define ecological flow regimes that are more ecologically beneficial than the current minimum flow paradigm, but which can be accommodated in the context of rivers that are managed to meet multiple objectives.

One exciting insight is the potential that targeted water conservation can play in allowing for greater flexibility in implementing ecological flows.
