Reducing Climate Vulnerability through Adaptation in Planning Process in La Paz-El Alto, Bolivia

SEI is providing technical support for a focal group led by the Bolivian Ministry of Environment and Water to do water planning in La Paz-El Alto. The goal is to help build capacity for water resources planning under climate change.

Water scarcity is a growing concern in the Andes Region, as climate change could affect precipitation patterns and is already causing the retreat of tropical glaciers that feed major rivers – and at the same time, population growth is increasing water demand.

The Bolivian government is developing a programme to make water and sanitation systems in La Paz and El Alto more climate-resilient. The programme aims to identify new options for drinking water supplies to supplement the current supplies, including several river basins and micro-basins.
