These products will enable Europe’s coastal managers, decision makers, and stakeholders to enhance forecasting, prediction and early warning capabilities, improve the assessment of long-term coastal risk and optimise the mix of prevention, mitigation and preparedness measures.

Resilience-Increasing Strategies for Coasts – toolKIT (RISC-KIT) started in November 2013 and run until April 2017. The €7.6 Euro project is financed through the EU’s FP7 – Collaborative Project.

The empirical work of the project is carried out at ten sites throughout Europe. SEI leads the Swedish site in the municipality of Kristianstad in southern Sweden. The aim is to complement existing knowledge as well as ongoing processes and contribute to improving our understanding about how best to manage risk in a complex coastal system such as on the coasts of Kristianstad.

The first step is to review existing risk management plans, both at a national scale and at the local scale within Kristianstad municipality. As part of this, information about past flooding events, the current management of the coast, contingency plans in case of major flooding, the different ways that local people, organisations, and municipalities prepare to cope with major flooding events as well as the views of local people and other actors on these topics will be collected.

Secondly indicators that can be used to assess the resilience along the coast will be developed. In the municipality of Kristianstad the focus will particularly be on indicators related to coastal parts affected by extreme hazards.

Finally, the project will be looking at measures to reduce risks on the coast. Existing measures will be identified and support given to the development of new measures that help prevent or reduce coastal flooding, and help people to prepare for and recover from flooding if it occurs.
