This report estimates the emissions and climate change impacts of current and potential fossil fuel projects for the new Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).
AIIB will be a major new funder of infrastructure in developing Asia, where demand for power is growing faster than any other region in the world. Done right, it could promote an inclusive and sustainable Asian energy transition. The wrong lending choices, however, could have disastrous consequences for the region, which is particularly vulnerable to climate change.
SEI and Oxfam looked at the carbon dioxide emissions from three fossil fuel projects AIIB has already approved and estimated the potential climate damages. The report also looked at three possible scenarios for future AIIB lending.
Based on this research, Oxfam released an accompanying report that lays out a vision for how AIIB can chart a new path of sustainable development, avoiding the mistakes that have beset other major development lenders who continue to finance too many fossil fuel projects.
